Google Books

Google Books allows you to search the full text of books and magazines Google has scanned. This is a great opportunity to preview materials before making the decision to purchase or borrow them. It's important to be cognizant that the amount of text you can view will be limited; with that said, you can still utilize the same advanced search techniques in web searching to locate materials specific to your research.

Google Books: Get the book

If you've found something in Google Books you'd like to borrow for your research, you can track down a local copy. To do this, look for the Get this book link, as indicated in the above screenshot. Clicking that link will give you several options: Buy digital, buy print, and a list of libraries you can borrow the title from. If you don't see Palo Alto University listed, try searching through the Search WorldCat link provided at the bottom of the page.

After clicking the Search WorldCat link, you will be presented with a list of libraries near you that have the aforementioned title. You can select the title of the university and be directed to their respective catalog.

Google Books: Book Chapter Request

If you come across a book chapter through Google Scholar that is not available through the library at Palo Alto University, you can make a request through the interlibrary loan request form.

Navigate to the Targeted Search feature on the library's home page. Enter the title of the book for the chapter you're seeking. After locating the book in the search results click the title to be brought to its record page. Look for the interlibrary loan request button, highlighted in the above screenshot.

After clicking the request button, you will be brought to the request form. The default is always Article Copy so be sure to select Chapter Copy before completing the form. Fill out the fields marked with an asterisk to ensure the form is completed. If you have additional questions about the interlibrary loan process, please contact the department at ill@paloaltou.edu.

Purchase Request

If you find a book that is not in our collections, you can make a purchase request through WorldCat Discovery to see if we can add it to our eBook collection. To do this, start at the WorldCat Discovery search box on the library's homepage. Enter the title of the book you're looking for and select the yellow search button. When you're directed to the results page, look at the left side of the page for the search limiters. The Held By Library option's default is always set to Palo Alto University; switch it to Libraries Worldwide to properly update your search.

When you locate the record for the book in question, click on its title. Look for the purchase request link, located on the right side of the page under Access Options

Be sure to fill out all the fields marked with an asterisk and include all the appropriate citation information for the title in question. If you run into any difficulties with completing this form, please contact us at librarian@paloaltou.edu
