Academic Writing

About this Guide

Academic writing is a style unique to scholars and researchers, and developing that style remains a cornerstone of the scholarly journey. More than a means of communication, academic writing epitomizes critical, descriptive, analytical, and persuasive modalities. As doctoral students embark on their research endeavors, mastering the nuances of academic writing requires investment in learning the processes of inquiry, analysis, and synthesis. Mastering the nuances of academic writing enables scholars to articulate their insights effectively, engage with scholarly discourse, and meaningfully contribute to their respective disciplines. Academic writing is often formal, clear and precise, focused and well-structured, logical and well-sourced. However, it can also be abstract, evocative, and personal. For specific academic writing conventions and standards of psychology and counseling, please consult the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Seventh Edition (2020).
