Citing Generative AI

The most up-to-date guidance from the American Psychological Association on citing artificial intelligence can be found here: How to cite ChatGPT, by Tim McAdoo. Please note this was originally published in 2023, with the most recent update being February 23rd, 2024. Guidance on how to appropriately cite artificial intelligence will evolve over time.

If you're quoting or reproducing any text that was created by ChatGPT for a research paper, the recommendation is to credit the author of the algorithm with a reference list entry and in-text citation. From McAdoo's example:

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).
